Understanding the realities of female reproductive health, including the
menstrual cycle, is an important part of maintaining overall good health
and planning for your future fertility. Sadly, many women are in the dark
about pregnancy, ovulation, menstrual cycles, and their own bodies. In
fact, in a recent survey on the basics of female fertility, only ONE woman
in more than 12,000 polled got all 15 questions correct! Most of the
respondents answered less than half of the pregnancy, ovulation, menstrual
cycle and fertility questions correctly.

Menstrual Cycle Information
The menstrual cycle is controlled by the reproductive hormone system and
is necessary for pregnancy and reproduction. In women, menstrual cycles
typically happen on a monthly basis between puberty and menopause. During
the menstrual cycle, a sexually mature female body gradually increase the
amount of estrogen in the lining of the uterus, and as the hormone reaches
a heightened level, estradiol is then produced, followed by a stimulation
of the female ovaries by a luteinizing hormone or follicle stimulating
hormone. Once the Follicle stimulating hormone begins developing the
ovaries produce an egg that shortly becomes an ovum. The ovary will then
release the egg or two eggs during
ovulation. The endometrium or lining of the uterus peaks
shortly following ovulation and changes the lining of the uterus to
prepare for conception and receipt of the fertilized egg to establish
pregnancy.
